What is 1530 hours in military time

At first glance, 1530 hours in military time may be confusing or intimidating to read, but it's quite simple when broken down. In the military, they use a 24-hour clock when telling time, instead of the 12-hour clock that civilians use. So, 1530 hours in military time would be 3:30 PM in civilian time. To further understand how to read and convert military time, let's review some basics.

Military time is based on a 24-hour period, beginning at midnight as 0000 hours and ending at 2400 hours (or 12am). Civilian or standard time is based on two separate 12 - hour periods – one period starts at midnight and ends at noon, the other period begins at noon and ends at midnight. Standard time is denoted by the am/pm symbols – 8am would be 0800 in military time, while 8pm would be 2000 in military time.

When converting from civilian (standard) to military time you simply subtract 12 from all numbers over 12 if am is indicated; add 12 if pm is indicated. For example: 9:00 am in civilian/standard time would be 0900 hours in military time; 9:00 pm in civilian/standard time would be 2100 hours in military time.

To convert from military to civilian/standard time you add 12 to all numbers less than 1300 hours; subtract 12 for all numbers over 1300 hours. For example: 1000 hours (10am) in military/24 hour clock would be 10:00 am on the civilian clock; 2300 hours (11pm) on the military/24 hour clock would be 11:00 pm on the civilian clock.
